Planting Hope at Tiny Homes: A Day of Caring

At Magdala House, we believe in creating spaces that do more than provide shelter—we should inspire, provide comfort, and empower our tenants to believe in themselves. Thanks to the incredible generosity of our donors during the Give STL and Give STL Summer Campaigns, we took a significant step toward this goal with our recent “A Day of Caring: Gardening Event” at Tiny Homes.

The event marked the beginning of our ongoing efforts to beautify and enhance the various living spaces in Magdala, including Tiny Homes, a transitional shelter for unhoused individuals working to rebuild their lives. On this special day, tenants were greeted by the sight of vibrant fall mum plants, colorful pots, and lush soil neatly arranged on picnic tables. Each tenant received gardening gloves, a small pot, and the opportunity to plant flowers they could nurture in the coming weeks.

The event wasn’t just about planting flowers but cultivating a sense of community and belonging. Our CEO and President, Thomas J. Mangogna, greeted the tenants warmly, engaging with them and capturing moments of joy as they planted their mums. In addition to beautifying their spaces, the tenants worked together to prepare the garden, growing vegetables they would later enjoy as part of their meals.

As the tenants began planting, the atmosphere was filled with camaraderie and support. Those who needed assistance were helped by fellow tenants, fostering a spirit of collaboration and care. The addition of outdoor rugs and chairs provided by the donors further enhanced their living spaces, making the outdoors feel more like home.

All felt the day’s impact deeply. One tenant, reflecting on the event’s significance, shared how it brought him solace in a time of grief. “Gardening today helped me focus on the positive,” he said. With everything I’ve been through, this was a much-needed moment of peace.”

Another tenant expressed heartfelt gratitude, saying, “Thank you for thinking of us. We are often forgotten, but today, I felt seen and valued.” These words echo the profound emotional impact that simple acts of care and attention can have on those we serve.

As we continue our mission to create welcoming and supportive environments at Magdala’s living spaces, we are reminded of the power of community and the importance of each donor’s contribution. Together, we are not just planting flowers; we are planting hope.
