Magdala House: a Dedicated Effort to Help the Unhoused and Homeless

Magdala House has partnered with St. Louis City since 2021. With the city’s support, we operate four shelter locations under our Unhoused and Homeless Shelter Programs. Our shelters include Jefferson Spaces (Tiny Homes) and Sisters Mission, transitional shelters, and Biddle House Opportunity Center, an emergency shelter for adult single men. We also have Hammond Apartments, which is a rapid rehousing program.

Our CEO, Thomas Mangogna, has always said, “Magdala has never been afraid to face any challenge.”

The leadership of the Unhoused and Homeless Shelter Programs and our CEO have welcomed the challenge of creating spaces that will positively impact the tenants’ lives.

Our goal is to give individuals a place to rebuild their lives. We provide case management services, beds, nourishing meals, clean showers, and essential laundry facilities. We work closely with our tenants to help them overcome obstacles, such as addiction, mental health issues, or financial struggles, through various partnerships. Our case managers also work with tenants to create a personalized plan for securing housing, employment, and other necessary services.

“We care on purpose,” said Garfield Duckett, director of the Unhoused and Homeless Shelter Programs, as a testament to former tenants’ progress. “We are proud of the work we are doing here at Magala. And are looking forward to continuing the work.”

We want tenants to leave our program with renewed hope and look forward to new beginnings. And since 2021, we’ve made a difference in the lives of over 400 former tenants who desired to live independently.
