Darrel Mason: From Streets to Service – A Journey of Resilience and Hope

We often encounter tenants in our unhoused programs who are timid about explaining how they ended up unhoused. Some are frustrated that their life decisions led them to this predicament. Despite their disappointment, many are resolute in their determination to find ways to have a promising future, which is a beacon of hope in their challenging circumstances.

Darrel Mason, 36, a father of five, is proudly creating a promising future for himself and his children by joining the Air Force Reserve. His love for his children and his determination to provide a better future for them is evident in his excitement about this opportunity to meet new people, travel, and experience life.

“With the struggles I’ve been through, I know I am prepared for this. I’m naturally an organized person, and I love to work out. But what sets me apart is my mindset. I’m more positive and know I can do anything I put my mind to,” said Mason, his optimism shining through his words.

Mason, who grew up in the Shaw neighborhood, comes from a military family. His grandfather, a veteran, raised him along with his grandmother. He speaks of his grandfather with reverence, citing him as an exemplary man. Despite being provided with a good home, his adolescence, naivety, and curiosity about the streets led him into that life. He frustratingly admits, “I had no business in the streets.”

Now, with the opportunity to create a brighter future for himself and his family, he is embracing the Air Force Reserve opportunity. He challenges himself with books and quotes that inspire him not to give up. While in the reserves, Darrel plans to return to school to study political science. His ultimate goal is to make a difference in politics, a testament to his unwavering determination.

Darrel is grateful to his children and their mothers for supporting him. Their support means the world to him. He is also thankful to Magdala and the staff for being supportive and providing the space and program to help him reach his goal. He was especially impressed with our CEO, Thomas Mangogna, who came and spoke to the men at Biddle House when Magdala took over. Recounting his past struggles, Darrel pays tribute to Magdala House’s dedication to helping others in similar situations. Magdala’s support and programming have positively impacted his life, and he is a living example of those benefits.

Thank you, Darrel! We wish you the best of luck!
